SnackFace Review: Mezcla Plant Protein Bars

I go through phases with protein bars. Some months, I find myself relying on them almost daily for midday nutrition. Other months, I completely forget about them. (They also tend to get a lot of slack in the health and wellness space. “Eat whole foods! Don’t eat a bar!” To which I say: I’ll eat what I want, thank you very much.)

A bar I haven’t been able to stop thinking about or craving since I ran out of the sample the brand sent me, however, is Mezcla. Brand new to the bar scene, Mezcla Plant Protein bars rely on pea crisps for their main source of both protein and, to my delight, crunch.

Bar textures usually tend to fall into a few camps: soft, crunchy, chewy, and/or dry. It’s rare to find a pleasantly crunchy and chewy protein bar with more of a Rice Krispies treat texture and less of a dry, hard crunch. It’s even harder to come by this texture that’s not made from a soy crisp.

Texture aside, Mezcla offers three truly incredible flavors: Mexican Chipotle Hot Chocolate, Peruvian Cocoa Peanut Butter, and Japanese Matcha Vanilla. The flavors are decidedly epicurean and, well, grown-up. Each flavor is better than the last, with Japanese Matcha Vanilla being my surprise favorite of the bunch.

THE SNACKFACE STATS

FLAVOR: 5/5 OVERALL
If you try one flavor out of them all, make it the Japanese Matcha Vanilla. It’s sweet, but not overwhelmingly so, and the matcha flavor is nicely balanced out with vanilla. Second favorite goes to Mexican Chipotle Hot Chocolate (chocolate with a warming heat at the tail end), followed by Peruvian Cocoa Peanut Butter (could use more peanut butter but I’m a peanut butter fiend).

TEXTURE: 5/5
Mezcla bars manage to be crunchy and chewy, a texture I haven’t personally experienced since the endless Luna bars of my early 20s. This is my ideal texture for a protein bar.

INGREDIENTS: 4/5
While I wish all ingredients were organic, I respect and appreciate keeping these bars vegan, soy-free, gluten-free, and non-GMO, mainly because it means more people can try them!

SNACKABILITY: 5/5
I actually wish I had more places to run to and from so I could throw these in a bag and go. They are perfect for any time but especially multitasking.

WHERE TO BUY: You can shop the bars on their website or find a store near you.

Happy snacking,
